Washington can refer to two very different places: Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, and Washington State, located on the country’s west coast.
Washington, D.C. is a federal district founded in 1790, bordered by Maryland and Virginia, and serves as the political center of the U.S., home to landmarks like the White House, U.S. Capitol, and Lincoln Memorial. It is where the President resides and Congress meets, making it the heart of American governance. Washington State, on the other hand, was admitted to the Union in 1889 and is known as the “Evergreen State” for its lush forests and diverse landscapes. Its capital is Olympia, while Seattle is the largest city, famous for its tech industry, coffee culture, and proximity to natural wonders like Mount Rainier and Puget Sound. Though they share the same name, one represents the nation’s capital on the East Coast, and the other is a Pacific Northwest state with a vibrant economy and natural beauty.
