About

Algeria is the largest country in Africa, spanning more than 2.38 million km², with its capital in Algiers and a population of over 47 million people.

Algeria—officially the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria—is located in the Maghreb region of North Africa, bordered by Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, Western Sahara, Morocco, and the Mediterranean Sea. Its geography is dominated by the Sahara Desert, which covers more than four‑fifths of the country and shapes its climate, landscapes, and settlement patterns. Most Algerians live along the northern coastal strip, where the climate is Mediterranean and agriculture is more viable.

The country’s cultural identity blends Arab, Amazigh (Berber), and Islamic heritage, with Arabic and Berber recognized as official languages and French widely used in education and business. Islam is the state religion, and the vast majority of the population is Sunni Muslim. Algeria has been home to numerous civilizations—including the Numidians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans—before becoming a French colony in 1830. After a long and violent struggle, Algeria gained independence from France on 5 July 1962, an event that continues to shape its political and social landscape.

Today, Algeria is a unitary semi‑presidential republic, with a political system influenced by its independence movement and subsequent reforms. Its economy is heavily dependent on oil and natural gas, which account for the majority of export revenues. Despite its vast desert regions, Algeria is known for its rich cultural traditions, historic sites such as the Casbah of Algiers and Roman ruins at Djémila, and striking natural landscapes ranging from the Tell Atlas mountains to the deep Sahara.
