Update from Mike, November 2021: Ulaanbaatar has a new international airport. although it has taken the same nake as the old airport it has a new airport code.

Chinggis Khaan International Airport (IATA: UBN), Mongolia’s newest and largest air gateway, opened on 4 July 2021 to replace the older Buyant-Ukhaa Airport and support the country’s growing aviation needs. Located in the Khöshig Valley of Sergelen, about 52 km south of Ulaanbaatar, the airport features a 3,600‑meter runway, modern passenger facilities, and a terminal designed to handle up to 3 million passengers per year, making it Mongolia’s primary hub for MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Aero Mongolia, and Hunnu Air. Built with major funding from Japan’s international development programs, the airport supports both domestic routes and long‑haul flights to destinations such as Frankfurt, Istanbul, and Tokyo, while also serving as a key logistics link for Mongolia’s mining sector. Its modern design, improved safety, and expanded capacity mark a significant upgrade for the nation’s connectivity and economic ambitions.
