Attapeu International Airport (AOU) is a small but notable airport in southern Laos, built to stimulate economic growth in the remote Attapeu Province near the borders with Vietnam and Cambodia. Located roughly 26–28 km from Attapeu town, it opened in 2015 with a modern terminal and a 1,850‑meter runway designed for regional aircraft such as the ATR 72 and Fokker 70. Despite its modern facilities, the airport struggled with extremely low passenger demand, leading to the suspension of commercial flights in 2016 and its official closure to civilian operations in 2017. In 2022, the airport was formally transferred to the Lao People’s Liberation Army Air Force, shifting it from a public transport hub to a military‑controlled facility. Today, Attapeu International Airport stands as an example of ambitious regional development that never achieved sustained commercial viability.
