Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) is the largest and busiest airport in Bangladesh, serving as the main gateway to the capital city, Dhaka.
Located in Kurmitola, about 17 kilometers from central Dhaka, the airport carries the codes IATA: DAC and ICAO: VGHS. It was opened in 1981 and later renamed in honor of Hazrat Shahjalal, a revered Sufi saint. Operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, the airport handles more than 6 million passengers annually, accounting for over half of the country’s total air traffic. It features a 3,505-meter (11,500 ft) asphalt runway, capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, and serves as a hub for Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US-Bangla Airlines, Novoair, and Air Astra. The airport is currently undergoing a major expansion with the construction of Terminal 3, which will significantly increase passenger capacity and modernize facilities. With over 150 daily international flights, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport connects Bangladesh to destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and beyond, making it a vital hub for travel and trade.
