Osmani International Airport, located in Sylhet, is the third largest airport in Bangladesh and an important hub for both domestic and international travel.
Situated about five miles northeast of Sylhet city, the airport carries the codes IATA: ZYL and ICAO: VGSY. It was originally built during World War II (1944–1945) as a military airfield and later developed into a civilian airport. In 1986, it was renamed in honor of General M.A.G. Osmani, the Commander-in-Chief of Bangladesh’s Liberation Forces. Today, it is operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh and serves as a hub for Biman Bangladesh Airlines, with Novoair, US-Bangla Airlines, and Air Astra also using it as a focus city. The airport features a 10,236-foot asphalt/concrete runway, capable of handling wide-body aircraft, and in 2022 it served over 634,000 passengers. Osmani International Airport plays a vital role in connecting Sylhet’s large expatriate community, especially in the UK and Middle East, with direct flights to destinations such as London and Dubai, alongside frequent domestic services to Dhaka.
