Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) is Rio de Janeiro’s second‑busiest airport and a major domestic hub, located just 4 km from the city center and adjacent to the financial district. Opened on 30 November 1936, it was built on reclaimed land in Guanabara Bay and later named after Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont. The airport features two short asphalt runways—1,323 meters and 1,260 meters—which contribute to its reputation for scenic and technically demanding approaches. Operated by Infraero, SDU handles more than six million passengers annually and remains one of Brazil’s top ten airports by traffic. Its compact terminal, extensive dining and shopping options, and proximity to downtown make it especially popular for shuttle flights between Rio and São Paulo.
