Salgado Filho International Airport (POA), serving Porto Alegre and the Greater Porto Alegre region, is one of southern Brazil’s most important aviation hubs. Originally opened in 1923 as São João Airport, it evolved from an early air club into a major commercial facility, receiving its current name in 1951 in honor of Joaquim Pedro Salgado Filho, Brazil’s first Minister of Aeronautics. Today the airport is operated by Fraport Brasil and features a 3,200‑meter asphalt runway along with two passenger terminals—Terminal 1, opened in 2001, and Terminal 2, which has undergone multiple renovations to support growing demand. Its modern infrastructure, strategic location, and role as a focus city for Azul Airlines make POA a key connector for both domestic and regional travel across southern Brazil.
