São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) is Brazil’s largest and busiest airport, serving as the primary international gateway to São Paulo and one of the most important aviation hubs in South America. Opened in 1985 and located in the municipality of Guarulhos, it operates under the name Governador André Franco Montoro International Airport and is commonly referred to as Cumbica due to the nearby district and Air Force base. The airport features two long asphalt runways—measuring 3,000 and 3,700 meters—and handles more passengers, aircraft operations, and cargo than any other airport in the country. Since 2012, GRU has been operated by a consortium including Invepar, Airports Company South Africa, and Infraero, and it maintains strict slot controls with a maximum of 45 operations per hour. Its strong performance has earned global recognition for punctuality, making it a standout among major international airports.
