Recife/Guararapes–Gilberto Freyre International Airport (REC) is the main air gateway to Recife and one of the most important airports in northeastern Brazil. Originally known as Ibura Airport, it was renamed Guararapes Airport in 1948 and later received its current name in 2001 to honor the Recife‑born sociologist Gilberto Freyre. The airport played a strategic role during World War II as a refueling stop for transatlantic flights and has since undergone multiple expansions, including a major terminal renovation in 2004 that increased its capacity from 1.5 million to 9 million passengers per year. Today it features a 3,300‑meter runway—the longest in the region—and is operated by AENA, serving extensive domestic routes and international destinations across the Americas, Europe, and Africa.
