Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport (GIG), officially named Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport, is the city’s largest and most important international gateway. Opened in 1952 and located on Governador Island, it features two long runways—including a 4,000‑meter strip, one of the longest in Brazil—and serves as a major hub for both domestic and long‑haul flights. The airport was renamed in 1999 to honor famed musician Antônio Carlos Jobim and has been operated since 2014 by the RIOgaleão consortium, which includes Changi Airport Group. Its facilities are shared with the Galeão Air Force Base, reflecting its origins in early Brazilian naval and military aviation
