Auckland International Airport (IATA: AKL) is New Zealand’s largest and busiest air gateway, located in Māngere, about 21 km south of central Auckland. Opened in 1966, it now handles nearly 19 million passengers per year, serving as the primary hub for Air New Zealand and a major operating base for Jetstar. The airport covers 1,500 hectares and features a single 3,635‑m runway (05R/23L) capable of accommodating large aircraft such as the Airbus A380, making it one of only two airports in the country able to do so. A second, smaller northern runway is planned but has faced repeated delays, with completion currently expected around 2038. AKL operates both international and domestic terminals, supporting more than 158,000 aircraft movements annually and contributing significantly to the national economy.
