About

Windhoek, the capital and largest city of Namibia, is a vibrant hub nestled in the heart of the country. Perched at an elevation of approximately 1,700 meters (5,600 feet) above sea level, it stands almost precisely at Namibia’s geographical center. This bustling metropolis thrives on a constant influx of migrants from other regions within Namibia, contributing to its growing population of 486,169 as of 20231. Windhoek serves as the social, economic, political, and cultural nucleus of the nation. Here, Namibia’s national enterprises, governmental bodies, educational institutions, and cultural centers converge. The city’s origins trace back to a permanent hot spring, known to local pastoral tribes, where Captain Jonker Afrikaner settled in 1840 and erected a stone church for his community. Despite wars and challenges, Windhoek emerged anew in 1890 when Imperial German Army Major Curt von François founded it during the German colonial era. Today, it stands as a testament to resilience, diversity, and progress in the heart of southern Africa
